Optimal flare stack location and safe burner pit operation through CFD dispersion modeling

In order to ensure personnel and community protection United Safety used appropriate gas dispersion and heat flux models in different release scenarios involving a wide range of weather conditions to identify safe locations and modes of operation for flare stacks and burner pits near two well sites.

QRA for drilling and well testing activities using CFD dispersion modeling

United Safety successfully conducted dispersion modeling that mapped satellite topography data from a 1-arcsecond (750 m2) grid resolution into a QRA that identified the largest risk sources and determined practical solutions to make well operations safer.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Flyer

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling is the most accurate process modeling tool available and is widely trusted and experimentally validated across numerous industries. Going beyond basic empirical models, High Performance Computing (HPC) is used to iteratively solve principal equations related to fluid flows, thermodynamics, heat transfer and other physical phenomena over a finite computational grid, known as a mesh. The mesh and equations are computationally solved to obtain high levels of detail and scientific accuracy for real world problems.

Determining the dispersion characteristics and tolerability criteria for gas released from the area on a well site.

In order to determine the dispersion characteristics for venting H2S gas from the flare on a well site United Safety developed a dispersion model and analyzed results based on the tolerability criteria for the gases released. The end result was a clear understanding of the gas released and its potential impact.
