3rd-annual Shutdowns Turnarounds Fort McMurray Conference

The turnaround and shutdown community gathered to exchange knowledge and new strategies to overcome current industry challenges.

The first day has brought discussions on a number of high-importance topics including operational readiness, managing and avoiding scope creep and regulatory compliance and communication. The seminars were designed to give attendants the knowledge and tools necessary to mitigate risks while minimizing costs.

The second day of the event focused heavily on the importance of turnaround safety.

Several experts took the stage to reiterate how much a well-structured safety management process can help boost productivity of a turnaround, and how companies should be putting it as a key priority.

United Safety’s own, Darrel Dowd Vice President Industrial, Eastern Hemisphere was a guest speaker, leveraging his 25 years of experience in the oil & gas and petrochemical industries to talk to attendants about Emerging Industry Best Practices for Changing Site HSSE Management from a Cost Center to a Value Generator.

During his presentation Mr. Dowd examined the latest safety management trends that result in safer and more productive turnarounds, while lowering costs and risks.

These trends included an effective full cycle Knowledge Capture, in order to improve the learning loop for next turnarounds. Mr. Dowd spoke of the importance of the capture and dissemination of the wealth of knowledge generated and how to make proper use of it in order to impact the efficiency and effectiveness of these projects while keeping everyone safe.

He also described processes like the Needs Assessment and the Stewardship, used respectively to plan the work with key stakeholders to proactively identify areas that are likely to generate unplanned work and to review and evaluate positive and negative points of the turnaround.

Mr. Dowd finished by saying how optimal onsite safety resource management techniques can help improve productivity and ultimately improve overall safety culture.
